“Dance in Metal”
by T. Lux Feininger
about 1928 - 1929
“Karla Grosch’s performance of Metalltanz, or “Dance in Metal,” exploited the reflective properties of polished metal. The avant-garde performances produced by Oskar Schlemmer’s Stage Workshop at the Bauhaus School are seen today as significant forerunners of modern performance art and multimedia theater.
The photographer T. Lux Feininger studied at the Bauhaus with Schlemmer, under whose direction theater and dance became popular and important aspects of the German school’s program.”
The Bauhaus museum in Berlin was pretty disappointing. They repeatedly did this thing where the wall text described a really fascinating-sounding project and then nothing was on display to represent those projects. The dance department was represented by a long paragraph and a single reproduction of a photo. Terrible! I want to know everything about Bauhaus dance. Bauhaus is such a good topic for a museum, too. I can imagine it being really great and interactive, but it just wasn’t.
